2019 Staffing Changes at FPC

Dear FPC Members,

Last year, our church hired a consultant and engaged in a process of exploring Christian Formation. This summer, the Session received the consultant’s report. After months of discussion and with the knowledge that Rev. Caitlin Foehse will be departing on June 30th, 2019, the Session, in November, adopted a new staffing model which I am pleased to share with you today.

First, we have formally begun the search process for a new Associate Pastor of Christian Formation. This position will be for an ordained pastor and serve as a replacement for the position currently held by Rev. Caitlin Foehse. There are several steps to this process, including appointing an Associate Pastor Nominating Committee. This team was elected by the congregation at a meeting on January 6th. They will now begin meeting to develop the Ministry Information Form, which is the official job description and position announcement.

Second, the Session also voted to create the position of Director of Children and Youth. This is a full-time staff position which will report to the Associate Pastor of Christian Formation. This new position combines the roles of Kelly Nicol (Director of Children’s Ministry) and Matthew Deffendall (Transitional Director of Youth and Families; the position previously held by Kelly Abraham). The goal behind these changes is to further integrate and enhance the inter-generational worship, service, and learning experiences of our whole congregation from cradle to grave.

Once these positions were approved by the Session, I met face to face with the staff to explain the plan. My hope was to begin the search for the second position in 2020. However, Kelly Nicol has shared with me her desire to transition out of her role after the end of Music and Arts Camp in June 2019. I am deeply appreciative of the work Kelly has done to grow our children’s ministry. Following a lengthy meeting with the Youth Fellowship Ministry Team and after conversations with Personnel, I am now convening a search team to assist me in the recruitment and screening of candidates for this position and will move swiftly to secure someone in this role.

This is a lot of information to absorb in a letter. My goal is to provide transparency throughout this process. We have created a page on our website for you to review the documents, job descriptions, and updates on the searches.  The Comprehensive Christian Formation Staffing Plan is included in this envelope. This is a very exciting opportunity for our church to implement the Christian Formation recommendations and shape the next chapter in our rich history. My sabbatical in the spring will not impede the search process and I will be deeply engaged as we move forward.
