The Chancel Choir is the primary service choir for the 11:00 am worship service. Comprised of a combination of volunteer and staff section leaders, the Chancel Choir’s repertoire is drawn from all periods of choral music to support and proclaim the scripture texts for each service. In addition to the Sunday service, the Chancel Choir provides musical leadership for liturgically significant services, such as Lessons and Carols in December and for Maundy Thursday of Holy Week. The Chancel Choir also often presents larger choral works for use during festive worship services or for seasonal concert settings.
The Chancel Choir season is from September through Trinity Sunday (late May or early June). For the months of June and August, the Chancel Choir becomes the Summer Choir, meeting only on Sunday mornings to prepare music for the service to follow. The choir does not sing in July.
The Chancel Choir rehearses each Thursday evening from 7:00 – 8:45 pm and on Sunday mornings at 10:15 am. Membership in the Chancel Choir is open to all who desire to lead worship through this ministry. No audition is required. For more information on joining the Chancel Choir, contact Marlon Hurst, Director of Music and Arts.
The Chamber Choir is an auditioned choir of 12-16 voices that performs a cappella music, primarily from the Renaissance period. The Chamber Choir sings periodically in both the 8:45 and 11 am worship services. The Chamber Choir rehearses from 9:45 – 10:15 am each Sunday from September – May.
Those interested in auditioning for the Chamber Choir should contact Marlon Hurst, Director of Music and Arts, for information about current openings in the choir.
CHILDREN & YOUTH MUSIC
Music for Youth and Children is directly connected to our LOGOS ministry that meets on Wednesday evenings.
The FPC Youth Choir is comprised of students from grades 6 – 12. The Youth Choir sings in occasional worship services and for special services such as the Advent Lessons and Carols and Youth Sunday. The Youth Choir’s music is drawn from all periods of choral music, and includes spirituals and contemporary songs.
Youth Choir members are encouraged to attend the Montreat Worship and Music Conference held the final week of June each summer at the Presbyterian Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, NC.
Three graded choirs are offered for children from age 4 -grade 5. Children learn hymns, choral anthems and psalms, as well as age-appropriate singing skills. The Grades 4-5 choir often serves as the soprano section for the Youth Choir, enabling the older children to sing more advanced repertoire.
Kathi Fleming & Marcus Thomas
The children’s choirs participate regularly in worship, present a Christmas pageant in early December, and sing each year in the Lessons and Carols and Palm Sunday services.
